Follow Valheim's natural biome progression from the Meadows to the Deep North, understand what each Forsaken unlocks and know when you are ready to move on.
HOW PROGRESSION WORKS
Valheim is structured around increasingly dangerous biomes. Each biome introduces new resources, crafting tiers and threats, while defeating its Forsaken opens the next major stage of progression. The official Valheim FAQ describes this loop directly: conquer a biome, defeat its Forsaken, then use the newly gained items and skills to move onward.
MEADOWS → BLACK FOREST
Defeat Eikthyr. His Hard Antlers let you craft the pickaxe needed to begin mining the ores that drive Black Forest progression.
BLACK FOREST → SWAMP
Defeat The Elder. The Swamp Key opens Sunken Crypts, where the next major material tier becomes available.
SWAMP → MOUNTAINS
Defeat Bonemass and use the Wishbone to help locate hidden resources. Prepare frost protection before committing to the Mountains.
FROM MODER TO THE DEEP NORTH
From the Mountains onward, preparation matters as much as raw equipment. Do not treat a boss kill as an instruction to sprint directly into the next biome.
MODER → PLAINS
Defeat Moder, establish Plains food and equipment progression, then prepare for Yagluth.
YAGLUTH → MISTLANDS
Defeat Yagluth before committing to Mistlands progression. Upgrade your food, armour and weapons as the new biome resources become available.
THE QUEEN → ASHLANDS
Defeat The Queen before travelling into the Ashlands. Iron Gate specifically identifies her progression item as useful for entering Ashlands content.
FADER → DEEP NORTH
Complete Ashlands progression before moving into Valheim 1.0's Deep North. The Deep North is the final biome added with the 1.0 release.
WHEN SHOULD YOU MOVE ON?
Do not judge readiness only by whether the previous boss is dead. Repair and upgrade the equipment you actually use, establish strong food production, stock relevant resistance and healing supplies, and create a safe route back home. If ordinary enemies in your current biome are still consistently overwhelming you, spend more time preparing before escalating to the next one.
